Award winning artist Willie Britt has been drawing and painting since a very young age. Growing up in rural areas, she learned to hunt and fish with her grandfather. From those experiences, she learned first-hand about animal behavior and anatomy. In an often-chaotic childhood that included many moves, she changed schools 16 times before graduating from high school. Through all the uncertainty, art and animals were the only constants and she found solace in both.

She had her first “one man show” in high school, and the following year won “Best of Show” by popular vote in the Mid-State Fair. Considering herself mostly self-taught, she continues to learn from many sources. Since no one can ever ‘know it all’, learning is a lifelong process and experimenting with new mediums sparks the creative juices when things get tedious. Though pastels are her favorite painting medium, oils have the advantage of being more durable in shipping and handling and are the focus of her newest works. Most of her paintings are available in Giclée prints and note cards.

Sculpture, especially bronze, is her first love and she has several pieces in different stages of progress. Her sculptural commissions include work for promotional vehicles for Pfizer and Kellogg, created by Prototype Source of Santa Barbara, California (the makers of the Oscar-Mayer Weiner-mobile). In addition to bronze, and prototype sculpture, she also works in steel, using a mig-welder and plasma cutter. In her early twenties she worked on a water well drilling rig, where she learned to weld and got her nickname, Willie. Her work has been collected by people around the world and can be found in England, Australia, France, Canada and the United States.

Willie currently lives in the beautiful Wet Mountain Valley at the base of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains in Colorado. She and her husband have 40 acres of land, shared by their many animals. An avid horsewoman, she spends most of her time with her six horses, one donkey, a pony, and a flock of sheep, pet pig, and three cats.
